Re: 2 Year old and Speech

Hi I can relate to you.  My son had exactly the same problem.  At the age of two he was saying basic words.  I went to my local maternal health nurse for other reason (problems with his foot) and she reffered me to a physiotherapist.  The phsyo saw that his speech and interactive skills was poor and she reffered me to a speech therapist (public system).  I saw the speech therapist and they did all types of tests and they said he has a slight delay problem.  My son is now 3 and attends kinda which is very helpful.  He like watching DVD;s and he picks up a lot of ones.  His speech has improved but compared to fellow boys at kinda he is still behind.  My doctor advised me that i am eligible for carer's allowance and with this money i would like to use for extra learning activities for my son.  If anyone know of these activities please let me know.

thanks

Re: 2 Year old and Speech

Hello mumof3lovelies,

I'm not sure how long ago you sent that post, so chances are its all figured out by now!  Just a couple of suggestions for you: go on to speechpathology australia website, and head to teh fact sheet area.  They have lots of different fact sheets about seeing a speech pathologist, and also the general expectation of speech for your age.

From what i'm hearing, he sounds like he is progressing well.  As long as he is understanding, then thats the main point.  You can encourage him to talk and communicate by using sign language, reading books to him often, and using simple techniques (ie. getting down to his level).

If you have further concerns, best to chat to your gp.

Hope that helps,

kara24
