2 Year old and Speech

I have a just turned 2 year old and I'm worried about his speech. I've seen a few 2 year olds talking really well with sentences etc and some not speaking at all. My toddler says several words and does a few hand signs but doesn't quite put them together in sentences, but knows what is asked and understands things, alot of the main words are, Hi Bye, Hello, Mum , Dad, Nanna, Pop, sissy, bird, dog, knows the dogs names and sisters names, please and Ta, drink, bottle, food, yeah, yes, no bike, car ,tree, star and several others. Is this acceptable or should I be worried as I had someone mention that at that age he should be talking in sentences etc.

Re: 2 Year old and Speech

I have a little girl turning 2 on Saturday and to be honest all she does is talk. Full sentences and conversations from her. But then I have a friend with a little boy who is 2 in three weeks and he says about the amount of words your son does. I think it's a boy thing. My little boy took longer to talk too. Even now he is 3 and a half and although he talks well sometimes my almost 2 year old talks better!!! I would give it a few more months before you get too worried. They say boys take longer to do everything and I must say I agree!!!

Re: 2 Year old and Speech
hi there,
have you asked your early childhood nurse, sometimes they are great to talk to about things like that, and can really put you at ease :) Every child is different, but according to guidelines, your son is at an appropriate place, so unless your gut feelings tell you otherwise id try not to worry!

Re: 2 Year old and Speech

I honestly wouldnt be worried..Your sons speech sounds fine for a 2yr old...I have 18 month old twins, ones a talker (boy) and the other doesnt talk anywhere near as much as her borther....As long as they have a few words and understanding, I wouldnt be concerned..I'm sure he will start and suprise you with full on sentences and you will wonder where it all came from!!

Re: 2 Year old and Speech

have a talk to your health nurse to help allay your concerns.

when my daughter was 2... I knew she could understand everything and said some words... and at times went through a couple stuttering stages which regressed her again and i got concerned.  I saw a speech therapist who said it was all normal.. everyone goes at their own pace...

now.. she is 5.... and does not stop talking!!!  oh for a peaceful day!!

lol... but I love it!

I am sure all will be fine
