Antenatal breastfeeding classes
Hi everyone. I'm just into my third trimester of my first pregnancy and am really keen to breastfeed my baby. But I've heard so many stories about how hard breastfeeding can be from friends who have had a hard time. One girlfriend even said she wished she'd learnt all about it before she had her baby. Does anyone know where i can find out about courses, or people who teach it? Thank you. Annabella

Re: Antenatal breastfeeding classes

The Australian Breastfeeding Association runs classes all over Australia. Check out their website, hopefully they'll have a class near you. http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/products/happen.html  Good luck with the breastfeeding, I hope it all goes well for you.

I also wanted to say that there are positive breast feeding stories out there and not everyone has problems. I've been lucky enough to be feeding my daughter for 15 months now and we are still going strong.  We never had any attatchment or supply problems and I've never suffered from mastitis. I hope you're just as lucky!

Re: Antenatal breastfeeding classes

Hi there

Firstly let me just say I think it's great that you've made the decision to breastfeed - that is half the battle. As Tigerseye said, it won't necessarily be a problem but it's good to be aware of what can happen and think about how you will handle different issues. I won't repeat the info on ABA classes, but they are good... however many hospitals also run breastfeeding classes, so it'd pay to check with yours. I've got a blogspot about Breastfeeding support with lots of stories from different women... there's a post about it in the general forums on here!

But congrats on your pregnancy and good luck with the exciting journey ahead.

RACH!

Re: Antenatal breastfeeding classes

Hi There,

Congratulations on your pregnancy and your decison to breast feed.
I am breastfeeding my second child (did not bf number 1 very long) for 4 months now - I must say that the biggest help to me has been speaking with other sucsessful bf mums. I also did a class while I was pregnant - This helped very much. I

Good luck

Re: Antenatal breastfeeding classes

Hi Annabella. I also wish i'd learnt more about it beforehand. i was talking to someone yesterday and she said she pre-booked a mothercraft nurse for two whole days and that this nurse was just fantastic, helping her with breastfeeding, getting her baby to settle and to sleep etc etc. When she told me i thought i wish i'd done that! I'm currently trying for a second baby and i know this time around i'll book someone in to help me beforehand. When i needed help with my first baby all the lactation consultants were booked out (and when you need help you need it NOW!) and i hadn't heard of mothercraft nurses. This friend explained that mothercraft nurses are better to book than lactation consultants because the nurses help with everything. all the best to you. MissMac.
