misscarriage / d & c

I had a d & c on Feb 4 and was around 11 weeks. My husband and I are naturally disappointed and want to try again as soon as we can. I have read a lot of conflicting info on the web and would like to talk to anyone who has a similar experience.

Re: misscarriage / d & c

Hi Sharryn

Although it has been a while since you posted I thought I would share my experience with you. Late November, I suffered from a 'missed miscarriage" at 10 weeks with my third pregnancy.  My baby had died but I did not notice anything wrong and thought I was still carrying a healthy living baby (especially when I was still suffering from all day nausea!).  At my first obstetrician's appointment he did the regular scan so I could see the baby but he could not detect a heartbeat. After confirming the date of my last missed period he said I was around 10 weeks and seemed very concerned at not being able to see the heartbeat.  He immediately sent me to a specialist to have an 'internal scan' where the sonographer confirmed that the baby had died at around the 8 week mark.  I was shocked, distraught and in a state of disbelief.  This sort of thing only happened to 'other people!"

I was scheduled in for an immediate D&C the following day.  What made it especially hard for me was the fact that my husband and I had not even told anyone I was pregnant!  So we had to call and tell our family the terrible news...that I was pregnant and had lost the baby.

The procedure was a simple 10 minute operation where they clean out the entire contents of the uterus.  I was admitted at 11.00 am and was out of hospital at 4pm the same day.  My obstetrician advised waiting for at least one cycle before attempting to conceive again.  It took me 6 weeks for my first period to come and I can tell you it is the first time in my life I have been happy to get it! So now we are in the TTC club again.

Sharryn, as you probably are now aware, miscarriage is more common than one would think.  In fact, I was told that about 1 in 4 women will suffer a miscarriage.  A frightening statistic!  It is amazing though, how once you mention it to other people, they share their own similar stories!

If you are wondering when to start again, I would first advise speaking to your obstetrician/gp or whoever has been treating you.  They have all the facts relevant to your particular case and are in the best position to advise you.  But from what I have heard and from the advice I have recieved, most practitioners will advise at least waiting for one cycle to ensure your body is 'back to normal.'

I hope I may have helped in some way.  I hope you are okay and would love to hear how you are doing.

Cheers, Lulu
