drinking water

My 3 year old daughter never seems to want to drink water. she always says she doesn't like it and then asks for juice or milk - although she will have water if there's nothing else around and she's really thirsty. she's never had soft drink so thank goodness that's not an issue.

i worry about her because i know kids only need a little juice or it's not good for them. she eats lots of fruit anyway so doesn't need  it and we only allow her juice at dinner time and only half a cup at that. and she needs milk for calcium so that's ok.  i suppose what i want to know is whether  i should worry that she doesn't seem to me to be consuming enough liquids in the day? it's not like we can stop keeping milk in the house. do kids grow out of this?

Re: drinking water

Hi

Do not worry about much, she is eating lots of fruits so thats fine. Why not offer her sickers or something she likes whenever she drinks water !!

Re: drinking water

Hi I had the same problem with my daughter but it was with fizzy drinks what I ended up doing was giving her own drink bottle and diluting it with water but it didn't work so I got rid of it entirely if you have to have juice you can hide it in the fridge or  fill her up an old juice bottle (so it looks the same as yours) dilute it with water and say it's her special drink.  And for milk you tell her she only has it after meal but in between she has water ignore all the tantrum and stubbornes it's only a week and she should be fine and when she drinks water make it a big deal by giving her stamps, stickers etc. Hopefully this will help.

Re: drinking water

I agree.. use an empty juice bottle and put some really watered down juice in it.. she will be able to have alot more of it that way..

My son never liked water, but now he goes to preschool, its his only option there so he will now drink it, even at home.. if you cut out there options, they are not going to make themselves sick.. they will give in and drink it eventually :)

Re: drinking water

i have discovered two little sneaky tricks when it comes to encouraging water

1) Freeze plain water in an incypole tray and then call it an icypole!! my kids fall for it every time!

2) add a drop of food colouring to the water - it makes it look very fun but doesn't add sugar or bubbles or stuff like that!

good luck
