Toilet training Boys

Hi

I've started to toilet train my little boy, my question is...is it best to sit them down or stand them up to train them to wee?

Thank you

Re: Toilet training Boys

I have no idea - my DS is just 2 and starting to take an interest in the toilet, actually also starting to realise when he's done a poo in his nappy, not that he'll come and tell me yet but if i ask he'll reply "poo" and point to the nappy so we're makign very tiny amounts of progress, no idea about standing or sitting, occassionally when he's int eh shower he'll pee and thinks it's hillarious but that doesn't really help does it! Anyone else???

Re: Toilet training Boys
I would think that sitting down would be better initially ... unless there is some indication they are ready to do otherwise (eg - if they have been watching an older brother or dad and are already mimicking the behaviour). It really would depend on the child but, I imagine that the "co-ordination" and "skills" required to successfully direct the stream might be just a tad beyond actual ability at that age.

Re: Toilet training Boys

My son learnt standing.. but he had his dad helping him out..  and he also learnt to go outside more than in the bathroom (the country life!!)..  my friend who is a single mum is asking a similar question  as her son only ever sees them sitting..  i dont really think it matters too much in the early stages, and once they get the hang of it, teach them to stand..

but i wonder if it would pose any problems later on if they tend to prefer to sit.. like when they go off to school and all the others boys stand.. i dont really know, but something to think about i suppose??

And just adding to what Chugga has said about skills and coordination.. You still need to be careful when they sit.. you may need to teach them to push it down so they aim into the bowl.. when my nephew was learning we found that if he didnt push it down a bit he would spray all over the room!!

Re: Toilet training Boys
Thanks for that Kazy. I would expect that whether "sitting" would be an issue later on would really depend on the child and the "values" at home ... a less confident child and/or from a home that values "social conformation" and stresses "fitting in" is more likely to be distressed by being "different" in some way - even if it is just a different preference to the other boys. But it probably wouldnt bother a child that is "comfortable in their own skin" - and would be less likely to bother a child who comes from a home that doesn't place a great deal of value on "conformation" (Im not talking about "anti-conformists - thats different again - with "anti-conformist" is actually another type of conforming ... ) Ive got the mission of TTing a boy coming up soon ... and all my plans have been blasted out of the water! I had planned to potty train first - but, I have the same issue with potties I have had with carseats, pushchairs etc and am having with nappies .... where do I find one big enough for my grandson? I dont know what its like over the ditch but - here they all seem to be designed for little bums - as if bigger little ones dont exist. Since we are having trouble finding a nappy/trainer pant to fit the poor wee fellow (we would make a great, and rather comical advertisement for real nappies if they were to film nappy change time) - so decided we should probably train him a little earlier than planned .... even if it is winter. I could see him being very easy to potty train. He comes into the toilet with us and we discuss what its all about ... but he just isnt ready to sit on a proper toilet ... even with his own toilet seat, which he loves (has glow in the dark ducks on and is way more comfortable than ours)
