IS YOUR SWEETIE SPOILT?

We’re living in a child-centric age where parents are often all too happy to allow their child’s needs to trump their own. Keep her happy. Keep him entertained. Keep them educated and well dressed and oh-so-very loved. But are all our efforts thwarted if we go overboard? Does spoiling your child actually put them at a disadvantage in the long term? The New York Daily News recently had some interesting thoughts on the topic…

It is hard to say no to your doe-eyed child when something catches their eye at the shops and becomes an instant obsession – the apparent key to their ultimate happiness. It’s even harder when he utters the dreaded words: ‘Come on, Mum! Pleeeease!’

If you find yourself saying “yes” too often, you are most likely paying your child a disservice. Spoilt children grow up to be dissatisfied adults, accustomed to their needs being met by objects or the attention of others and unable to see value in the simple things in life.

Many people define “spoilt” in terms of monetary abundance, but experts believe money is only part of the equation.  If your child interrupts you and expects your undivided attention at all times, she is spoilt; if he believes his needs trump everyone else’s, he is spoilt.

Emotional overindulgence is just as harmful as tangible excess, and moderation must be found in both realms to keep your child balanced and grounded.

If you’ve already noticed spoilt
behaviour in your children, it is not too late to turn back. A few simple measures can be taken to get you and your kids back on track.

Teach charity If your child does not play with all of his/her toys, take some time to go through the toys together and choose some to give away to charity. This not only rids you of clutter but teaches the value of giving to others while appreciating the things that they have.

Stand firm If you say no, stick to it. If you make a rule, maintain it. Keep your behaviour consistent and your child will eventually adapt.

Think of the future Be aware of the things that fulfill your child and imagine the trends following into adulthood. Is it the things in life that matter or is it the people and experiences? Is it somebody else’s job to entertain us or is an active imagination a lifelong asset? Get these things straight in your mind now and they’ll become the fabric of your child’s life.

What do you think?

Are kids more spoilt these days? Why? How will spoiling a child affect them as adults? Which is more harmful to a child: emotional or material spoiling? Click here to share your views on this topic in the My Child parenting forum
