I cannot get enough of these Crankypants! Whether they’re classic or custom made, they’re guaranteed to be astonishing! They’re all handmade and impeccably detailed – check out the owl and the pussycat nursery rhyme! Every size and style features extra rows knit into the bum to make room for a cloth diaper and a drawstring waist for growing room – very thoughtful. What’s even better is that due to the overwhelming popularity of the products, Crankypants have forged a partnership with a Fair Trade Federation certified knitting cooperative in Peru to have the styles made in greater quantities while keeping them hand knit and ethically produced. BLANKET BLISS

Words Ailin Bezzo from My Style
28 September 2009

I know that one of my favourite hobbies is sleeping.  I do it all the time – on the train, on the lounge, at my computer. I love it. As most of you would already know, babies also love sleep. Babies want to sleep – they need to sleep – but they sometimes find it hard to do. Unlike me, who has the ability to sleep anywhere (I mean anywhere – once I fell asleep in my performance review meeting), babies are used to sleeping while they are in the womb. That's where they are snugly held and in a perfectly temperature controlled environment. Once they are born, it's like they've crash landed on an alien planet. If they are left to sleep without being properly swaddled their involuntary movements will startle them awake. They may even scratch their face or cause their blanket to rub against their cheek making them think it's feeding time. Also, as they move about under their blankets different parts on their body are warmer or cooler than others which can also make it difficult for them to settle. Babies that wake up for any of these reasons are simply not getting the sleep they need - no wonder they wake up crying!

This is why swaddling is so effective. It helps babies gradually adjust to their new environment and get the sleep they need. It keeps them nice and snug so they can settle into their sleep. It stops the involuntary twitches that usually startle babies awake and keeps them at an even temperature. Swaddling is a tried and true method, used across many cultures and many generations of mums to get babies to sleep. It's taught in all pre-natal classes and recommended by every leading baby sleep expert. Swaddling is essential to ensure babies get the sleep they need. But in the past many parents have found it difficult to properly swaddle their baby. Now the Miracle Blanket has changed that by turning thousands of parents into swaddling experts. And the results are amazing! Not only do babies fall asleep faster and sleep longer, they also wake up smiling and happy instead of crying and tired – and you might find you’re not waking up crying and tired either! Get this lifesaver in a gorgeous palette of pastels, plus easy to follow swaddling instructions at Miracle Blanket.

NIGHT FRIENDS

Words Ailin Bezzo from My Style
28 September 2009

I’m not afraid to admit that at my age, there are nights where I’ll sleep with a nightlight. I’m a pretty well-adjusted young lass but I always preferred the soft glow of a nightlight to sleeping in complete darkness with nothing to guide me to the bathroom in the dead of night. I also, intermittently, sleep with the television on, the radio humming or with my mp3 player tooting softly in my ears. I think it’s fairly normal for children (and adults) to want an accompaniment to sleep – whether that is light, music, soothing sounds, smells or vibrations.

This is where Cloub B comes in. The original and the best in producing gorgeous, demure products that aide in a restful and safe night’s sleep for infants and children (and don’t forget the adults!). You might be familiar with Cloud B’s Sleep Sheep and Twilight Turtle which have calmed countless children to sleep. The company has now recognised the capacity to make a humanitarian difference in the world while helping children get to sleep with the launch of their Endangered Species Collection. Cloud B donates a portion of all proceeds from their Endangered Species Collection to Conservation International.

The line includes Dozy Dolphin a cutie-patootie dolphin who plays fun sounds when your children want to play, and plays soothing water sounds when they are ready to sleep. Dozy is also made from hypoallergenic, eco-friendly bamboo fabric so you’ll feel safe when tot starts carrying him around everywhere. The Twilight Sea Turtle is a fun and educational nightlight which illuminates in three soothing colours while also illuminating five endangered sea friends. The new Polar Cuddle Cub, a plush polar bear that gently vibrates when snuggled and has a soothing heartbeat pulse rhythm and Gentle Giraffe which makes unique Serengeti sounds, taking your child on a magical journey while effortlessly transforming playtime to sleep time. Go to Cloudb to see the whole great range.

SWEET DREAMS

Words Kelly Hennessy from My Style

You know when you see something so excessive and over the top that the mere though of the price tag sends a shiver down your spine? Well take a look at these majestic beauties!

The stately Prince & Company have a lot to say about their bassinets, opening with the bold statement that they are the worlds finest, and that the countless copycats only pale in comparison. I'm not arguing, these bassinets are straight out of a story book! Each style of bassinet has a suitably romantic name such as Swan Lake, Fleur de Lis and My One and Only, and they wouldn't look out of place in King Henry's castle.

Definitely worth a look, hold onto your credit card though. Mine is already suffering from enough stress. Prince Bassinets.

COT COUTURE

Words Kelly Hennessy from My Style

15 September 2009

A few months ago my mother bought a new sheet set and doona cover that she thought looked very fancy and distinguished, until she was almost laughed out of the bedroom. It seems she was accused of having the style of an 95 year old. It got me thinking about how important bed linen can be to the look and feel of a room. Lo and behold a few moments later I stumbled upon this little gem!

Cot Couture is a modern, eclectic and stylish range of infant bedding and accessories. All fabrics are made of 100% cotton, with comforters and cushions filled with poly cotton and polyester fibres. I love them I think they are so bright and playful. And even better, all comforter sets are reversible for twice the style!

A collection of retro inspired cards, invitations and ribbon, that reflects the duo's passion for design and providing a personal touch.

We are particularly taken by Mr Whale... but there are lots of gorgeous choices, all a huge step away from the typical, overdone designs we are accustomed to seeing of late and all with a fun vintage twist.

Melbourne shoppers will have the chance to see the collection at Magnolia Square Christmas Fair November 26 - 28, or browse through the range online at KatyJane.

HOT SUMMER DAYS

If you have noticed the recent rise in temperature and find yourself facing an alcohol free summer, I have the perfect treat for you!

I tested this Virgin Sangria recipe at a barbeque last weekend and it was an absolute hit. The flavour is phenomenal, its cheap, chic and healthy, and looks fantastic on a party table. Proving once again that pregnancy is a stylish time to shine!

Apple juice for ice cubes
1 1/4 cups water
1 small bunch fresh mint
1/2 cup sugar
3 cinnamon sticks
3 1/4 cups grape juice Juice
2 medium peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced
2 small pears, cut into chunks
2 medium oranges, sliced crosswise
2 small lemons, sliced crosswise
3 cups sparkling apple cider
Mint leaves, to garnish (optional)
Strawberries for a touch of colour (optional)

To make the apple juice ice cubes, pour the apple juice into two ice trays and freeze until the sangria is ready to serve.

Combine the water, mint leaves, sugar, and cinnamon in a small saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for several minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Once the mixture has cooled to room temperature, remove and discard the mint and cinnamon sticks.
Transfer the remaining mixture to a large serving bowl.
Add the grape juice, peaches, pears, strawberries, and the orange and lemon slices to the serving bowl. Mix well, and refrigerate overnight. Immediately before serving, mix in the sparkling apple cider and the apple juice ice cubes.

Garnish with fresh mint leaves, if desired. Enjoy!

PAINTED DREAMS

Words Kelly Hennessy from My Style
9 September 2009

I'll be moving out of my flat this month and one thing that struck me was how abysmally bare the walls are after two years! I think the problem was choosing a theme. I find it hard to commit to anything beyond your typical family photograph, anything else seems like I'm pigeonholing myself into a particular style. Perhaps the real problem is lack of.

The point of my story is to let you know about an original, stylish and whimsical idea, something that fits in perfectly with my love of family and my lack of decorative confidence. Lisa Golightly is a talented artist, and is the creator of Kiki & Polly, a brand she fittingly named after her daughters respective bird and imaginary friend. Her paintings are peaceful and imaginative, and best of all if you send in a picture of your child she will capture them on canvas! And these are no ordinary portraits.
