TRAVEL TIPS FOR A SMOOTHER JOURNEY

If you are about to head away on holidays, or contemplating a Christmas vacation, there are some simple things you can do to ensure a smoother journey for you and your family – no matter how young. Toddler tantrums, dirty nappies and cries of ‘I’m bored’ can be averted with a little forward planning.

An online travel survey of more than 1,000 parents conducted by BabyLove in 2018found that around four in five parents (79 percent) would consider travelling in the future with their children despite the potential challenges. The key deterrents cited by parents were ‘keeping bored children entertained’ and ‘changing nappies’. Those who said they would never travel with kids cited ‘hassle’ as one of their main reasons.

Leading nappy brand, BabyLove says there are some simple things parents can do to minimise stress around changing nappies when we travel.

‘Whether you are heading off in the car, or flying to your destination, packing some essential items in your nappy bag is key. So too is having your nappy bag within easy reach, so you can quickly access it when needed,’ says BabyLove Nappies CEO Bridget Spark.

Nappy Bag Essentials

  • At least 1 change of clothes
  • Plenty of spare nappies/Nappy Pants and wipes
  • A disposable change mat so you can change a nappy on the go
  • Disposable bags
  • Disinfectant hand wash or sanitiser
  • Plenty of formula, food and snacks.

When choosing nappies, Nappy Pants are a very practical solution for travelling as they can make for a faster nappy change for babies and active toddlers. ‘Our Nappy Pants have a 360-degree stretchy waistband so they can be pulled up easily, even with a wriggly baby who just wants to get moving. They can also be efficiently removed with easy to tear side seams. You can also complete a change with your toddler standing, so there isn’t the same need to go in search of a bathroom or change table at the airport or service station.’

Other key features of BabyLove Nappy Pants are their anti-sag technology, comfort and superior absorbency. The absorbent core shape helps prevent sagging, providing a secure fit and greater ease of movement for children.

Once you have your Nappy Bag sorted, it then comes down to the logistics and itinerary. Choosing child friendly destinations is an obvious plus when it comes to ensuring a more relaxed holiday for you, but so too is considering the time of day you set off.

Hungry babies and tired toddlers aren’t going to make the best traveling companions, but timing trips to work in with feed times and sleep behaviour can be helpful.

Midwife Cath, a Melbourne based midwife and maternal and child health nurserecommends breast feeding or bottle feeding once you are on the plane to settle your baby. Feeding at take-off (and landing) can also help with sore ears as the suckling equalises ear pressure.

Midwife Cath also recommends trying to travel at times when your children have eaten and/or are ready for sleep.

Top 3 Travel Tips:

  • Pack: Get your nappy bag sorted with a change of clothes and plenty of spare Nappy Pants, wipes and disposable change mat as well as some disinfectant hand wash, disposable bags and formula.
  • Timing: Breastfeed or bottle-feed once you are on the plane to settle your baby, including take-off and landing to help equalise the ear pressure. Consider older children’s eating and sleep times where you can.
  • Take-off: Take books, toys and powered up iPads and other electronic devices to entertain children.  Download their favourite movies in advance, and have snacks and water on hand to tide them over to the next meal break.
