Understanding the Sun’s Impact

The sun emits two types of ultraviolet (UV) rays that can harm your baby’s skin:

  • UVA rays penetrate deep, contributing to premature aging and long-term skin damage.
  • UVB rays are the primary culprits behind sunburn and immediate skin irritation.

Both types can cause lasting damage, making sun protection an essential part of your baby’s daily routine, not just a beach-day concern.

The Golden Rules of Baby Sun Safety

Seek Shade Whenever Possible

The easiest way to protect your baby is to avoid direct sun exposure. Strollers with built-in canopies, umbrellas, and natural shade from trees can all offer effective protection. Remember, UV rays can still reach your baby on cloudy days, so don’t let overcast skies fool you.

Mind the Clock

The sun’s intensity peaks between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, plan outdoor activities for the early morning or late afternoon when UV rays are less intense.

Dress for Protection

Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing with a tight weave offers the best defense. Darker colors tend to provide better UV protection than lighter ones. A wide-brimmed hat will shield your baby’s face, neck, and ears, while little booties help protect tiny feet from sun exposure.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

For babies six months and older, the recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are also ideal because they sit on the skin rather than absorbing into it, reducing the risk of irritation.

Applying Sunscreen Properly

  • Apply 15–30 minutes before sun exposure.
  • Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
  • Cover often-missed areas like ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of feet.
  • For babies younger than six months, it’s best to rely on shade, protective clothing, and avoidance rather than sunscreen.

  • Clip-on sunshades for car seats
  • UPF-rated swimwear for pool days
  • Baby sunglasses with UV protection (if they’ll tolerate them!)

Avoiding Common Mistakes

Relying solely on sunscreen – It’s an important tool but should be paired with clothing and shade.
Assuming clouds offer protection – UV rays penetrate through clouds, so precautions are still necessary.

Forgetting about reflection – Water, sand, and even concrete can reflect sunlight, increasing exposure.

Using heavily fragranced sunscreens – These can irritate delicate baby skin. Stick to gentle, baby-specific formulas.

Recognising Sunburn in Babies

Sunburn in infants may appear as redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or even small blisters. If you suspect sunburn:

  • Move your baby to a cool, shaded area.
  • Offer plenty of fluids.
  • Apply a cool compress or lukewarm bath to soothe discomfort.
  • For severe burns, consult your paediatrician immediately.
